Prayers & Liturgy
Readings of the day
The Church gives the whole world the same scripture each day. Here is how to find it and how to pray it.
Where to find them
Finding today's readings
The daily readings are published by the Church and are freely available. We link out rather than reproduce texts we are not licensed to publish.
In a printed missal
A daily missal or the Sunday missal at the Chaplaincy carries the readings for each day of the liturgical year, arranged in the three-year Sunday and two-year weekday cycles.
From your Bible
Each day has a first reading, a responsorial psalm, sometimes a second reading, and a Gospel. Note the references at Mass or from the Chaplaincy notice board and read them from a Catholic edition of the Bible.
How to pray them
Lectio Divina in four steps
- Step 1
Lectio — Read
Read the passage slowly, twice. Notice the word or phrase that stands out.
- Step 2
Meditatio — Reflect
Ask what God is saying through it, to you, today, in your studies and friendships.
- Step 3
Oratio — Pray
Answer God in your own words: thanksgiving, sorrow, petition, praise.
- Step 4
Contemplatio — Rest
Stay quietly in God's presence without words for a few minutes.
